Problem: Sound will not play

  • Try opening your sound file with the Windows Media Player (just double-click on it). If you can play and hear it using the media player, but cannot hear it when played through Question Tools then the screen file has probably lost its link to it. To correct this import the sound again and save your screen file.
  • Tip. If you hold your mouse over the space in the Screen Inspector that displays the name of your sound file a tooltip will appear. In this tooltip will be the absolute and relative path (list of folders) to your sound file, as far as the screen is concerned.
  • If you cannot hear the sound even when played through the Windows Media Player then make sure you check the volume on your computer. If you click on the Loudspeaker at the bottom of the screen you will see a volume control and a mute checkbox. Make sure that the mute checkbox is not selected. Move the volume control to the middle and you should hear a beep. If you do not hear anything then the cables from your computer to your loudspeakers may not be connected. If your computer's speakers have their own volume control then check this is not set to zero.
  • If you can hear a system beep when you change volume levels, but you still cannot hear your sound, then it may be another sort of problem with your sound level settings. Windows does not just have one sound control, it has several. If you double click on the loudspeaker icon at the bottom of the screen you should be shown an array of volume sliders. The important one is the Wave volume level. Make sure this is not muted and that its volume is not set to zero.
