NetSeries: Cannot find a test, lesson or survey?

Guest users (i.e. ones who have not logged on) can only access content that has the Special Access setting set to Guests Allowed or Guests Only. If a course is selected to allow guest access then all of the content within it will become available to guests, even if this content is not set to allow guest access.

Logged-on users can access all guest content, as well as content that is linked to any of the user groups to which they belong (where user groups are used to control access to content). If a course is linked to a user group then the user gets access to all of the items of content in the course.

Problem — users cannot find a test or survey

  1. Log on with your staff username and password, find the content, click the Settings button, and check that its Status is Published.
  2. Do the Advanced settings for the survey, test or lesson show it to be Searchable? If it not then the only way to reach the content will be via the Direct Link.
  3. Click on Find Users and find a user who cannot access the content. Click View to see his or her record. Is the user a member of a user group that has access to the content (assuming user groups are being used to control access to content)?
  4. Click on Find User Groups and find the user group that should give the user access to the content. Click on the View button and check that the content is listed for the group. If the user group only gives access to courses, then find the course and check that the course to which the user group has access includes the test, survey or lesson in question.

Once you have gone through these checks get the user to log off and log on again. The list of content the user can access is created at log on, and so any changes you make have no effect until the user logs on again.

From NetSeries' perspective

One easy way of thinking about the content a user can access is to work through the rules the NetSeries webserver applies to decide whether a user can see an item of content. When a user logs on the NetSeries application makes a list of every item of content the user can access. This is how it is done:

  1. Add all guest content to the list.
  2. If user groups are being used to determine access to content then go through each of the active user groups the user belongs to and add the content that is linked to the user group. Otherwise, all all content regardless of user group membership.
  3. Go through every listed item of content and remove it from the list if its status is either Draft or Deleted. Also remove any items that are not searchable.
  4. Go through every item in the list, and for each course item add its linked content to the list (while also checking that these new items are searchable, and are not marked as Draft or Deleted).
  5. Go through every item in the list and remove any duplicates.
  6. Put the list into alphabetical order.
