Creating Courses in NetSeries

A course is just a group of content items (of surveys, lessons and tests). You need only link a course to a user group to make all of the tests, lessons and surveys in a course available to members of the user group (assuming that user groups are being used to control access to content).

To create a new course press the New button, and then the Create Course button.

When you make changes you must press the Change button, otherwise the new information you have entered will not be sent from your browser back to the NetSeries application.

Name. This is the text the user sees as the title of the course. Underneath the name the user will see the description you enter.

Status. When Status is set to Draft then the course will not be available to users. Only published courses can be seen.

Searchable determines whether a user can search and find the course — in other words, whether the course will be listed for the user to select. You can make a course available (i.e. Published from the Status menu), but still keep it hidden by turning Searchable off, then users can still use the direct link to reach the course.

Special Access determines whether users can access the course without logging on. If you set a course to have guest access then all of its tests, surveys and lessons become available to guests as well.

Course content can be added and removed simply by double-clicking on it.

Likewise, owners can be added and removed by double-clicking. Owners determines which tutors have the right to see and edit the course record. This setting can be overridden if all tutors are allowed to view and edit all content (See Settings->Rights). All learning managers and above can see all courses and all results.

Direct link shows the url (the link) you can copy and paste into an email or onto a web site that will give users direct access to this course.

Changing the order. All items of content appear in alphabetical order. If you want items to appear in a particular order then changing the titles to start with numbers is one way of controlling appearance order. Note that when you log on all items of content are sorted alphabetically — this is to avoid the problem of the NetSeries application having to sort items every time you look at them. As a result any changes to titles will only affect the appearance order once you have logged off and logged back on again.
